Happy Squirrel Appreciation Day!

Squirrels may not seem very exciting because how common they are but did you know that there is special squirrel that is not so common. Northern Flying squirrels are a rare sight, especially compared to their more well known cousins, like the Red and Grey squirrels. But the rarity is not because they are in trouble, but because they are nocturnal. So unless you are in the forest at night, it is unlikely for you too see these gliding mammals.

One unique characteristic is that they have these blown out pupil that makes their eyes look black. This is used to help them see in the dark. Along with the longest whiskers of any squirrels, they are good at avoiding obstacles at night,

They will eat a wider range of food compared to their less aerial cousins, eating fungus, lichen, and mosses alongside fruits and nuts. Because of this they will spend a decent amount of time foraging around the forest floor.

So today, let's take a moment to appreciate all squirrels, those on the ground and those in the air.
